Habitat for Humanity Fredericton Area Inc.

Habitat for Humanity Fredericton Area Inc is a non-profit charitable organization working towards a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Habitat brings communities together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership. Since beginning operation in 2000, we have housed over 30 Habitat partner families throughout our territory. In 2017 alone, we successfully housed 10 families! As exciting and ambitious as this is, it is really just the beginning of solving the affordable housing situation that is a true crisis for many families in our area. Our work continues, with an ambitious goal of housing another 10 families in 2018! We hope you will consider joining our efforts as we build homes – and build hope.

Habitat for Humanity Fredericton Area Inc works with families who otherwise could not afford a home of their own, and helps them realize their dream of homeownership.

The Habitat model is based on a no-down payment, no-interest mortgage. This makes homeownership much more affordable and attainable to families who would not qualify for a traditional mortgage. It is important to note that Habitat provides families with ”a hand-up, rather than a hand out”. In lieu of a down payment, and to further develop pride of homeownership, Habitat families are required to contribute 500 hours of “sweat equity” (unpaid labor). They work alongside other volunteers to build their house, help with other Habitat projects, volunteer at the ReStore or volunteer within the community. This is a wonderful “pay it forward” initiative that encourages families to be involved in their community.

As a non-profit organization, we rely heavily on the kindness of our donors, partners and volunteers. Construction of Habitat homes is completed through the efforts of professional tradespeople, volunteers, and the future homeowner. Our largest ongoing funding tool is our Habitat ReStore. The ReStore is a discount renovation centre that accepts and sells donations of new and gently used building material, furniture, appliances, doors, windows, etc. All proceeds from the ReStore supports future Habitat home builds in our community and throughout our territory.
