Volunteer: Join our Cultural Brokering Program - looking for new members!

ABOUT CULTURAL BROKERS PROGRAM

If you know more than one language, immigrated to Canada from a different country,  interested in  helping newcomers to settle and integrate into Canadian society, then becoming a Cultural Broker with MCAF might be your next step!

Cultural Brokers are connected with newcomers who are facing multiple barriers to settlement and integration. A cultural broker enhances access to community services for newcomers and supports organizations in the community that wish to offer culturally sensitive and inclusive services to newcomers. This is often done through interpretation into various languages and on-demand.

Requirements:
Potential interpreter candidates are required to demonstrate the following:
• Proven proficiency in English (CLB benchmark: 8/8; ILTS: 6.5, completed level 6 -at least or Canadian education (university/college), certificate/diploma)
• Proven proficiency/competency in the first language and evidence of that (i.e. minimum of a secondary education diploma from a country of origin, in targeted language)
• PR status or a valid work permit
• Demonstrated personal suitability for interpretation
• Willingness to submit required documents and to complete required training.
• Legal age maturity age of 19

Requirements for becoming a Cultural  Broker: 
- Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector
- Resume
- Cultural Broker application 
- Introduction  to Interpretation training

Introduction: The Volunteer ESL  Tutor  Program aims to create a supportive and empowering environment for newcomers by providing them with one-on-one language tutoring. As an ESL tutor, you will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals who are striving to improve their English language skills. By dedicating just a few hours a week, you can help newcomers integrate into the new community, enhance their communication abilities, and unlock new opportunities for them.

Volunteer: Volunteer as a Career Mentor for Newcomers

The mentorship program aims to connect skilled newcomers to   professionals in  the Canadian job market. Mentors share their knowledge  about their occupation/profession, the local labor market, and the community with newcomers of similar occupations. Mentors do not need to be experts in the field or know everything about how to look for and secure a job here in Canada. They can offer support to the mentee on their job search and provide any advice on how to navigate the Canadian job  market.

Requirements of the program:

Able to have a minimum of five (5) meetings with the mentee. Ability to spend 30 minutes to 1 hour with the mentee. Willingness to share their knowledge and connections with the mentee.

We ask  all interested in volunteering with MCAF to submit the following:

Looking to make a meaningful impact in your community? Join the MCAF Community Connections Program and become a friend to newcomers in Fredericton!

The First Fredericton Friend (FFF) program connects local volunteers with newly arrived individuals and families participating in MCAF’s settlement programs. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share your culture, learn about others, and build lasting friendships.


Volunteers support newcomers by:

Offering social support and helping them feel at home Introducing them to local places like markets, grocery stores, parks, and community events Practicing English conversation Sharing and learning about each other’s traditions and customs Exchanging ideas, information, and resources


We especially welcome Canadian-born and long-settled immigrants to volunteer and support Government Assisted Refugee (GAR) families—individuals who have fled their countries to seek safety and a new beginning in Canada.


What we ask from volunteers:

Attend a training session Commit to a 6-month match with a newcomer individual or family Be open to building a genuine friendship based on shared interests

We're seeking a Canadian Citizenship Exam workshop Tutor to assist clients in preparing for and passing the Canadian citizenship exam. Your role involves guiding them through online study guide on the government website: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/publications-manuals/discover-canada.html  to help them to  meet the necessary knowledge requirements for the exam.

Responsibilities:

Understand Canadian History and Law: Familiarize yourself with Canadian history, government structure, legal framework, and citizen rights.

Develop Course Plans: Create organized lesson  plans based on official government materials, breaking down the materials into several sessions.

Guide Learning and Review: Use various teaching methods to help students systematically review the materials

Teaching Experience: Previous teaching experience is preferred.

Familiarity with Teaching Materials:  Knowledge of official citizenship exam study materials provided by the Canadian government.
